Family Functions

It's great to be writing to you this week, as Pastor Brent travels south for a meeting with some of our pastors and partners from Converge Mid-Atlantic. In preparation for this email, I started to reflect on the blessing of our relationship with Converge Worldwide (aka the Baptist General Conference). Some may not be aware of our affiliation with this movement, so I thought I'd give you some details.

•Converge is "a movement of churches working together to strengthen and start more churches

•Their mission is "to multiply transformational leaders and churches" through the key strategies of: spiritual growth, church planting, church mobilization, leadership development, compassion, missions, and generous living.

•Converge Worldwide is comprised of about 1,150 churches across the United States

•The national movement is divided into regions, including the Mid-Atlantic region, of which Old North is a part

Our affiliation and partnership with Converge illustrates the blessing and importance of connecting with God's people on a corporate level. Old North is truly part of something bigger than itself, while at the same time functioning as a unique local church that God has gifted for gospel ministry.

Speaking of functions within the church, we're going to study a passage of Scripture this week that deals with a similar issue. This text from 1 Timothy is arguably one of the most difficult passages in the Bible; I'm glad Pastor Brent will be back by Sunday to lead us through it! God has made us part of his family and as such, He has given us all a unique and particular function in order that the church may be built up and the gospel advanced.

I'll see you on Sunday!

Here's a look at the introductory video for our 75th anniversary celebration. God has certainly demonstrated incredible faithfulness to our church over the years. Enjoy!

Generosity and the Gospel

This week, I want to be sure you know that a significant percentage of our budget goes outside our walls as soon as it comes in to local and world missions. Old North is a generous church, and we do much to partner with ministries that are reaching people for Christ. One of the things you might not know, is that over the last 20 years, Old North Church has given close to several hundred thousand dollars to young churches to help them grow. Some of them are in our state, or in our District- but some of them are very close.

One of those young church’s pastors, and two of our Global Missionaries are going to join us Sunday. Josh Shank, founding pastor of Youngstown Metro Church; and Ken and Pat Goss, missionaries to China will be here. It will be a great opportunity to hear what God has done and is doing through their ministries, so come with anticipation!

By the way, this is a good time to remind ourselves that giving to our local church should be a priority. Throughout the New Testament we see examples of the local church as the launching pad for gospel ministry. One example is found in Acts 13 when the church in Antioch sends out Paul (then Saul) and Barnabas to preach the gospel. In another example, Paul tells the Corinthians that they would be “enriched in every way”, as they were “generous in every way” (2 Corinthians 9:11, ESV). He went on to say their cheerful and generous giving would produce thanksgiving to God and demonstrate their response to the gospel. Giving to our local church is a great opportunity to respond to the gospel and further its impact in the world.

I want you to know that when you give to Old North, your giving touches people locally and around the world. Do you know who we support? Do you know our missionaries? Do you know how many people are being touched by the gospel each week because of the resources you contribute?

Come Sunday and see what God is doing- and thank you for your partnership in the gospel!

Partnership Around the World

Have you been wondering about what's happening with the Water Well and Church project in Africa? Have you been waiting to see how and when you can participate in the needs of Japan? Then make sure you are here on Sunday. We'll tell you what opportunities are available for help, and we'll pray for Carol Perkins as she prepares to head to Africa for a month.

Don't forget to pray for the Sportsman's Dinner on Saturday as many friends from outside Old North will be here. Each year, Steve Scott leads one of our best outreach events and has built a reputation for using his avocation for hunting to tell people about Jesus. Pray that God uses Saturday's event in a mighty way! And finally- if you haven't heard by now- last week, we voted to invite Cyle Young to be our next Children's Pastor. Cyle and Patty have already found a house and will begin here working with Steve on April 4th.

God is working in some incredible ways and He invites us every week to be Partners in the Gospel, so I'm looking forward to telling you more about that on Sunday!
